Hammocks, Trees, You, and Africa

Have you ever wanted to change the world? Sitting there watching the news and thinking to yourself, “Dang, I wish I could help those folks out.” I know I have. That is one of the driving forces behind why I chose entrepreneurship, I wanted to increase my sphere of influence so I could help more people.

So imagine my surprise when I received the opportunity to be a brand ambassador for a company that does just that! I have discovered that being a brand ambassador can be tricky. Not only do you have to like what the company sells, you have to like the company, and then they have to like you. So when Madera came across my desk I was excited at the opportunity. I already knew that I liked their hammocks but I needed to learn more about who they were as a corporate citizen. While I was doing my due diligence I was very pleased to learn about their charity work in Africa.

For every hammock they sell they plant two trees in Africa through their partner Trees.org. It’s a rather beautiful concept, a legacy that lives on long after we are gone. Through Trees.org they teach local farmers in several regions of Africa about nitrogen fixation, how to care for forest gardens, and how to harvest nuts and fruits from the trees they grow. This creates work, sustainability, and food for the farmers to sell at the local markets growing the local economy. When the trees die they are harvested and used for cooking fires. An old saying comes to mind

“…Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats for a life time.”

It’s pretty cool that a piece of gear in my Pack can have a positive effect on someone halfway around the world. It’s a nice change from the guilt I usually encounter when I consider the impact my standard of living has on others around the world.
